Mandatory Climate Reporting & The AASB: Readiness Strategy

By N. Naina · DeccanBridge

Australia is transitioning towards mandatory, standardized climate-related financial disclosures. Guided by the Australian Accounting Standards Board (AASB), this shift fundamentally alters corporate assurance protocols.

The End of Greenwashing

With the ACCC and ASIC actively pursuing "greenwashing" claims, superficial sustainability reports are a severe liability. The AASB's alignment with international ISSB standards requires rigorous, audit-ready data on Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, alongside transparent transition planning.

Integrating Financial and Non-Financial Data

CFOs and audit committees must drive this integration. The days of siloed sustainability teams are over. Climate-related risks—both physical and transitional—must be quantified and deeply embedded within the core financial statements and capital allocation strategies.

Assurance Readiness

Phased requirements for external assurance will soon become law. Organizations must establish robust internal controls over non-financial data immediately to prevent material misstatements and ensure seamless statutory compliance.

Preparing for assured climate disclosure

With the AASB sustainability standards moving climate reporting from voluntary narrative to assured disclosure, the work that matters now is foundational: reliable greenhouse-gas data, a defensible methodology for Scope 1, 2 and material Scope 3 emissions, and the governance to stand behind forward-looking statements. Numbers that cannot be evidenced will not survive assurance.

Organisations that start early — building data systems, controls and board-level oversight ahead of their first mandatory reporting period — avoid the scramble that turns a reporting obligation into a credibility risk. The goal is climate disclosure that investors can rely on and regulators cannot fault.
